Our Patient Philosophy

Dr. Peter Costantino explains
a procedure to a patient's spouse

The Center for Cranial Base Surgery is one of very few centers in the US, that has the capability of removing skull base tumors using virtually all types of open and endoscopic surgical techniques.

The Center’s Director, Peter Costantino, MD FACS is fellowship trained specifically in cranial base surgery. This dual fellowship training in cranial base surgery has allowed Dr. Costantino to apply either open, or minimally invasive endoscopic surgical techniques for the optimal treatment of patients.

Our team is dedicated to combining excellence and innovation with compassionate care, to optimize surgical outcomes, minimize complications and benefit patients by achieving three primary objectives:

  • CURE: Completely remove tumors when feasible, even in the most delicate locations.

  • FUNCTION: Preserve natural facial movements and nerve function through the use of microsurgical techniques.

  • APPEARANCE: Maintain aesthetic appearance with the use of endoscopes, which help minimize or eliminate external incisions, and plastic surgery techniques that preserve appearance.

Multiple Procedures During a Single Stay – The team strives to maximize each patient's hospital stay by performing all stages of a procedure during one hospitalization, unless the patient's safety or wellbeing determine otherwise. This facilitates the patient's rehabilitation after surgery and return to everyday life.

A Multi-disciplinary Surgical Team –
Our team combines state-of-the-art technologies with the expertise of neurosurgery, head and neck surgery, neuro-orology, neuro-anesthesiology and plastic surgery. We unite specialists in radiation therapy, medical oncology, interventional radiology and minimally invasive spine surgery. Other supporting disciplines
include neuro-radiology, physical rehabilitation and intensive care. Specially trained nurses, and speech and swallowing therapists provide vital assistance. Our team approach allows safe access to and removal of tumors at the base of the brain, without neurological impairment. Specialists restore patients to their pre-surgical appearance and function.
